‘Seeing the Light’

by Maggie Millar

The exhibition will be officially opened by Maggie’s brother Geoff Barrett (a former headmaster of Kyneton Secondary College)

This has two meanings for me: the light and its importance in painting, and in finally doing what I think I should have been doing all my life!! I get such joy from transforming the separate elements of colour in paint pastel or ink, on paper, canvas or board into an image. It’s like a miracle, and such fun! In fact I haven’t had so much fun since kindergarten! I think that’s when I first fell in love with colour: I still remember the bright shiny squares of coloured paper we cut out and made into pictures. I was always drawing at school, loved art class, but was not encouraged to go to art school by my adoptive parents. When I connected with my original family, I discovered three people with artistic talent: my mother, my sister and a cousin I’ve yet to meet. So it’s in my blood. I often wonder what kind of work I’d be doing if I’d been encouraged when I was young, but I’m so glad I’ve finally seen the light! So is my glass half empty or half full? Actually it’s BOTH !!
